The Easy Method

The NVIDIA Shield runs on Android TV, which means you can download VPN apps directly from the Google Play Store. We recommend NordVPN because it has a dedicated Android TV app that is optimized for remote controls.

The NVIDIA Shield TV is widely considered the best streaming device on the market thanks to its powerful AI upscaling and fast processor. However, like all streaming boxes, it is limited by your geographical location.

By installing a VPN, you can unlock a massive amount of hidden content on Netflix, Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer. Furthermore, a VPN can stop your Internet Service Provider from throttling your connection during peak gaming hours.

Method 1: The Google Play Store (Easiest)

Since the Shield TV uses the official Android TV operating system, installing a VPN is as simple as installing a game on your phone. This is the method we recommend for 99% of users.

  1. Turn on your Shield: Navigate to the home screen.
  2. Open the Store: Locate the Google Play Store app in your apps list.
  3. Search: Use the search bar (or voice search button on your remote) and type in the name of your VPN, such as "NordVPN" or "Surfshark".
  4. Install: Click the Install button and wait for the download to finish.
  5. Log In: Open the app. You will usually be given a code to enter on your phone or computer to log in quickly without typing your password with the remote.
  6. Connect: Select a country from the list and click "Connect".

Our Top Recommendation

NordVPN is the fastest option for 4K streaming on the Shield.

Method 2: Sideloading (Advanced)

If your chosen VPN provider does not have an app in the Play Store, you will need to "sideload" it. This means manually installing the APK file.

  1. Get Downloader: Go to the Play Store and install the Downloader app (look for the orange icon).
  2. Allow Permissions: Open Downloader and allow it to access files.
  3. Enter URL: In the URL bar, type the direct download link for your VPN's APK file. You can usually find this on the provider's support page.
  4. Install: Once the file downloads, click "Install". You may need to go to Settings > Security and allow apps from "Unknown Sources" first.

The Best VPNs for NVIDIA Shield

Not all VPNs work well with a remote control. Some are designed for touchscreens and are a nightmare to use on a TV. We have tested these three, and they all have excellent "TV Friendly" interfaces.

1. NordVPN

Fast speeds are essential for the Shield because you likely want to stream in 4K. NordVPN's "NordLynx" protocol is the fastest we have tested, ensuring you don't get buffering circles.

2. Surfshark

The best budget option. The Surfshark app for Android TV is very clean and easy to navigate. It also includes a "CleanWeb" feature that blocks ads on other apps.

3. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN creates a shortcut on your Shield home screen, making it very quick to turn on and off. It is slightly more expensive but offers a very stable connection.
